I had never been to Denmark and held very few preconceived ideas of what it would be like. It brings to mind Hamlet, beer, and my colleague from The Moth, Lea Thau who was raised there. I had decided to stay in Stevns, an area near my Subject for the documentary film. It turns out that this decision and the AirBnB I chose were the best decisions I could have made. My hosts, Malcolm and Kate, married for over 50 years, were elegant and delightful company. They fed me my first dinner in Denmark, and subsequent nights we would gather at the day’s end to drink tea and eat butter cookies. Malcolm drove me into town to Junior Foto, where I was able to buy chargers until my bags arrived. I strolled through their gardens, smelled their lilac bushes, and wandered through their hazelnut trees. Heaven.
